Ola finds out that his newly wedded wife is no virgin. Upon this discovery he visits his mother and seeks to divorce her. Through Ola's announcement, a family meeting is called and secrets start to spill.
Life is no zebra tells a story of how people's lives are shaped by certain societal values that have lived for centuries, from generation to generation. When Ola discovers that his newly wedded wife Ronke is no virgin, he seeks a divorce as he finds her unclean. This leads to a series of opinions from all family members. We see how slowly but eventually, the family understands human values and fight against archaic stereotypes. Life is no Zebra is a beautifully written piece. With its multiple switch in POVs and the blend of Adages in narration, the author is a fine blend of Chinua Achebe and Lola Shoneyin.
